My journey to an alternative lifestyle stemmed from my deteriorating health at the age of 22. I found myself in a BAD situation that left me missing a lot of work and spending days in bed, miserable with no relief, due to chronic pain, inflammation and fatigue. I also experienced muscle, joint and nerve pain which lead me to be "diagnosed" with Fibromyalgia. As you can imagine this was not what I wanted to be doing in my early 20's!
Not Having It!! It wasn't long after starting "treatment" that it became obvious that my meds were not cutting it. I had bouts of insomnia no energy, my hunger was erratic and to make it worse I was falling asleep at work. This just was NOT going to work for me! So, trusting my intuition I decided to take action. I got off the meds and decided that I was going to eat better, workout more and hope for the best.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race I Started out like most people with the typical brown rice and chicken, gym memberships, and all fruit smoothies. I started feeling better almost immediately but the chicken was getting old and the fruit smoothies were spiking my blood sugar leaving me grasping for energy drinks during the afternoon slump. I was riding on the energy of the new way of life I had adopted and wanted more.
A Pension for Learning Being healthy wasn’t as trendy as it is now nor was the information as available as it is today but I knew I couldn’t go back to staying in bed all day. So, I did research and learned what options were out there. With some trial and error over the next 8 years I refined my diet, honed my skills and learned valuable lessons.
Some of the most valuable things I learned are:
You don’t know how bad you feel, until you start feeling better.
Your mind set will get you everywhere.
No one can do the work for you.
Everyone’s body is unique and should be treated accordingly.
Reflection Through this experience, the one thing I wish I had was a mentor, friend, family member, anyone who had some insight and would be there to support me. That's what lead me to become an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. I feel personally driven to help people, and coaching is the perfect way for me to get that fulfillment.
Summing it up! As you might imagine my journey to feeling better took me down all types of unexpected roads, paved and unpaved. This introspection went way beyond the food I was consuming and spiraled out into all the different aspects of my life, from cleaning supplies to career development to my attitude on life and so much more. I really started to put the picture together on how nothing I do is singular in its effects on my life.
These days my life revolves around my two adorable kids, husband and our collective health’s and wellbeing. I LOVE cooking and could spend hours in the kitchen if the little ones would let me. I have a lot of hobbies/ interests and don't like to be restricted, so finding balance is a must! I consider myself a Flexitarian, I try to eat mostly whole foods with some meat/ poultry and a minimal amount of dairy. This is what I have found works for me but not something I push on my clients or even my family. Each person's body is unique and therefore needs to be treated as such. What works for me doesn't always work for my kids or husband, but with some planning we make it work. Life is not always easy, in fact it takes a good amount of effort. Because of the results, I see in myself and our family dynamic, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I now coach full time and am greatful for the opportunity to help people change their lives.
